Artist's Description of Abnegation
Purchase this painting
This painting uses a combination of realistically painted images in a surrealistically styled structure to express a concept via a somewhat obscured method. The title, Abnegation, is also an oblique word meaning self-denial, not immediately perceived by the viewer. The format of the painting includes arches in the background, ripe pears on a tree branch floating in front of the arches, and a figure on the right side, somewhat obscured, facing away from the pear branch. There are faint, glazed, transparent images moving in and around the other, more overt images, which gives the whole painting a sense of otherworldliness. The classical use of arches and a robe-like garment on the figure, as well as the Renaissance-type colors of red and blue, gives the painting a sense of religious feeling and spiritual context. The main theme of self-denial is exhibited by the figure seeming to move into the shadows away from the ripe fruit on the pear branch, her hand cupped open but empty. The symbolism is largely left up to the viewer to interpret and can have various meanings.
